Weather Forecasting
Did you know that your daily
weather forecast begins with the
simultaneous gathering of
atmospheric data in thousands
of locations around the world?
Weather observations are taken
on land and at sea, while
hundreds of weather balloons
are released to gather data
about the atmosphere at varying
heights.  Land and sea
observations occur four times
each day, every six hours, and
weather balloons are released
every twelve hours.  This
mountain of information is then
fed into complex weather
forecasting computer models,
such as the Global Forecasting
System, which model the
Earth's atmosphere beginning
with its current state.  The
models then move the
atmosphere forward in time
using mathematical equations,
providing future values - or
forecasts - for the variables that
describe the state of the
atmosphere, including
temperature, pressure,
moisture, wind speed and wind
direction.  The National Weather
Service, and various
commercial weather forecasters
such as AccuWeather, The
Weather Channel and Intellicast
all use the model output to
develop daily short range and
extended range weather
forecasts.

Where is the world's
worst weather?
 Here
is one candidate.
Exploring Hurricanes
The main parts of a hurricane are the
rainbands, the eye, and the eyewall.
Air spirals in toward the center in a
counter-clockwise pattern in the
norther hemisphere (clockwise in the
southern hemisphere), and out the
top in the opposite direction. In the
very center of the storm, air sinks,
forming an "eye" that is mostly
cloud-free.
