Aquatic Ecology – Scientists at Australia’s Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) have discovered hundreds of new marine species and dozens of undersea mountains in a project to monitor the Commonwealth Marine Reserve Network off southern Tasmania. This scientific endeavor is intended to take inventories of biodiversity and habitats, and further the ongoing monitoring of the Marine Reserve Network. The science team’s findings included 274 species new to science and a further 80 seamounts, or undersea mountains, which are some of the most biologically important habitats in our oceans. <<More>>
Marine Biology - Scientists have identified the mechanism by which sea creatures navigate across vast ocean distances. Working with sea turtles and salmon, researchers have shown that anomalies in local magnet fields are used as markers in an internal magnetic map. <<More>>
